What are Functional Fabrics? Definition, Production Methods and Application Scope

Functional fabrics refer to textile fabrics that are endowed with special physical, chemical or biological properties beyond conventional wearing performance through raw material optimization, special weaving technology or post-finishing treatment. They can adapt to complex usage environments, meet specific functional demands and realize targeted protective, regulating and service effects.

Main Types of Functional Fabrics

  1. Flame-retardant fabric
  2. Ultraviolet-proof fabric
  3. Antibacterial and deodorant fabric
  4. Waterproof and oil-repellent fabric
  5. Moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric
  6. Thermal insulation & cold-proof fabric
  7. Anti-static fabric
  8. Radiation-proof fabric
  9. Anti-mite and moth-proof fabric
  10. Wrinkle-resistant and easy-care fabric
  11. Breathable windproof fabric
  12. Shock-absorbing and wear-resistant fabric

Common Production Methods

  1. Functional fiber spinning method
Mix functional additives such as antibacterial agents, flame retardants and anti-ultraviolet powders into polymer raw materials during spinning to produce permanent functional fibers, then weave them into fabrics.
  2. Yarn modification treatment
Carry out functional modification processing on yarns before weaving to endow the yarn itself with corresponding special properties.
  3. Fabric post-finishing method
Impart target functions to finished grey fabrics by means of padding, dipping, coating, spraying and high-temperature setting, featuring low cost and flexible process.
  4. Composite lamination technology
Combine multiple layers of fabrics or functional films through bonding and pressing to achieve composite functions such as windproof, waterproof and breathable.

Application Scope

  1. Apparel field: Outdoor sportswear, functional casual wear, cold-proof clothing, sun-protective garments, health-care underwear and daily easy-care clothing.
  2. Industrial protective field: Flame-retardant work clothes, anti-static overalls, chemical-proof clothing, high-temperature resistant garments and dust-proof protective suits.
  3. Medical and health field: Disposable medical textiles, antibacterial medical dressing fabrics, sterile isolation clothing and hospital special bedding.
  4. Home textile field: Antibacterial bedding, anti-mite mattresses, waterproof sofa fabrics, warm household textiles and easy-care home fabrics.
  5. Special industry field: Military textiles, geotextiles, automotive interior fabrics, aerospace textiles and logistics transportation special fabrics.
  6. Public facility field: Public health protective textiles, environmental protection filter fabrics and special decorative functional fabrics.
